Synthesis of Conversations with Leading Transport Researchers

Chris De Gruyter

Chapter 22 in Conversations with Leading Transport Researchers, 2026, pp 231-251 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a synthesis of key findings across the interviews that were undertaken with the 20 world-leading transport researchers for this book. The findings are synthesised under a number of key themes, including motivations, research ideas and approaches, elements of good transport research papers, collaboration, funding, research supervision, the writing process, journals, book writing, conferences and seminars, communicating research findings, research impact, time management, success in academic careers, and key challenges. In general, much diversity in the findings was found across the researchers who were interviewed. In some instances, differences could be explained by gender, particularly in relation to the unequal burden with service-related roles faced by some females in academia. In other cases, but more rarely, could differences be explained by discipline, geography or career stage, potentially reflecting increased levels of internationalisation and interdisciplinarity in transport research. This chapter also includes a self-assessment exercise to help readers apply the unwritten rules to their own academic journey.
