Negotiated interculturality

Christoph Barmeyer, Madeleine Bausch and Ulrike Mayrhofer

Chapter 5 in Constructive Intercultural Management, 2026, pp 78-96 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, we explain how interculturality can be negotiated in a constructive way. We define the concept of interculturality as a dynamic process of interpretation and adaptation that can lead to new rules, forms of collaboration and behaviours. We examine the possible impact of critical incidents as well as the role of actors and contextualization in intercultural negotiation processes. We present three approaches to negotiated interculturality: the construction of a third culture, dilemma theory and negotiated culture. Negotiated interculturality should be considered as a dynamic process in which actors interact to change their organizational and work practices while pursuing their interests and goals.
