Chapter 1 in Decarbonizing European Industries, 2026, pp 1-23 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter introduces climate policies in the global economy, emphasizing their central role in achieving the 2°C target of the 2015 Paris Agreement. It begins with an overview of climate policy and then examines renewable energy sources (RES) and deep decarbonization. Special attention is given to European climate law, a cornerstone of the European Green Deal, which provides a framework for reaching climate neutrality by 2050. The Green Deal outlines a comprehensive package of policy initiatives to drive ecological transformation. The chapter highlights both global and European trends, considering political, economic, environmental, and social motivations shaping climate policy. Governmental action is essential in implementing climate strategies, supported by tools such as Carbon Footprint (CF) and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). These provide measurable data on emissions, enabling effective strategies for reduction and sustainability. The transition to climate neutrality is complex, yet integrated policies can transform challenges into opportunities for innovation, competitiveness, and long-term resilience.
