Introduction to Mid-sized Cities and Regions in Global Competition

Peter Karl Kresl

A chapter in Mid-sized Cities and Regions in Global Competition, 2026, pp 1-3 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Mid-sized cities are often overlooked as we are fascinated by the actions of large cities. Smaller cities have also received a good bit of attention, but those in the middle have been overlooked. We intend to deal with this deficiency in our understanding of the competitiveness of cities. The competitiveness of all cities will be based upon: their quality of life; their access to skilled workers and ideas; their access to adequate human and financial resources; and their engagement with other cities. Also, leadership must be widely based, and a well-thought-out plan is necessary. In this book, we examine mid-sized cities in the US, Australia, and Europe.
