Installers and energy transitions in Gothenburg and Rotterdam

Erwin van Tuijl

Chapter 3 in Mid-sized Cities and Regions in Global Competition, 2026, pp 55-82 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The role of cities in energy transitions is highly debated. This chapter explores how the medium-sized cities of Gothenburg and Rotterdam affect installers – firms that provide installation, maintenance and repair services – in energy transitions. It aims to explore the opportunities and challenges for installers in realising energy transitions in these two post-industrial cities. To that end, we follow the literature on urban energy transitions and differentiate between cities as actors and places of energy transitions. We use these approaches to structure our empirical case studies. It ends with policy recommendations to support installers and to accelerate energy transitions.
