Planned knowledge locations in Porto

Chapter 4 in Mid-sized Cities and Regions in Global Competition, 2026, pp 83-113 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The planning of knowledge locations and innovation precincts in medium-sized European cities presents unique challenges, as these cities strive to position themselves within global knowledge networks while assuring mobile talent retention and the consolidation of local innovation ecosystems. This chapter explores and illustrates these challenges with the case of Lionesa Business Hub, a reconverted industrial precinct near Porto, Portugal. In particular, it explores planning and management strategies around the concepts of real estate as a service and workplace well-being, discussing the extent to which these new endeavors are becoming increasingly relevant to attract and retain firms and mobile knowledge workers in similar spatial settings.
