Informal housing strategies and multiproperty dynamics in Cochabamba's urban periphery

Abstract: This chapter examines the consequences of increasing capital pressure on land in peripheral urban areas of the Bolivian metropolitan region of Cochabamba, where land distribution is dominated by the informal land market. This is made possible by the logic of peripheral urbanization, through which residents gradually develop and occupy land via decentralized, self-organizing practices. Adopting a critical political-economic perspective reveals that popular and indigenous strategies for producing space, such as Andean multilocality, are increasingly serving extractivist functions in urban areas through the adoption of multiproperty, following the country's adherence to rent-based accumulation. Drawing on experiences in peri-urban areas of the Cochabamba metropolitan region, the chapter then discusses the challenges of implementing long-term informal decommodification strategies, concluding that regulatory schemes must recognize popular practices as an integral part of an alternative urban development model.
