Concluding reflections: the ongoing quest to tame Amazon's platform power

Chapter 14 in Unpacking Global Amazon, 2026, pp 357-366 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this concluding chapter, the co-editors offer tentative generalizations flowing from the chapters about Amazon's business model and particularly its patterns of work organization and employment relations and contests around them. At the same time, they highlight some important implications for praxis and policy. Finally, they sketch out what might be some defining trends or issues in struggles around Amazon going forward, and most importantly, a research agenda, particularly focusing on some key “unsettled” issues. The discussion is organized around five broad themes: work organization and labor regimes; varieties of anti-unionism and labor strategies; technology and robots; global e-commerce competition; and contention over platform power. Viewing global Amazon in its totality and its variegations and variations is argued to be a central task for future scholarship as well as activism surrounding the company and global e-commerce logistics.
