The long-term vision for the clean molecule economy

Chapter 12 in European Gas Markets in Transition, 2026, pp 216-224 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores the evolving role of sustainable fuels in global and European decarbonisation pathways amid shifting gas markets, geopolitical disruptions, and rising climate ambition. It examines the implications of the 2022 gas supply shock and the implications for global gas markets. The chapter highlights the scaling up of sustainable fuels, particularly biogas, biomethane, hydrogen, and e-fuels, and outlines the investment and policy gaps that hinder their deployment. Drawing on IEA data and case studies such as Denmark, it shows how blending mandates, infrastructure funding, and international cooperation can accelerate the transition. With the COP28 Global Stocktake setting a clear direction, the chapter argues that sustainable fuels, complementing electrification, are essential for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors and ensuring energy security. A robust regulatory framework and global standards will be critical to unlocking their full potential.
