Embracing decarbonization in the gas sector
Andris Piebalgs
Chapter 6 in European Gas Markets in Transition, 2026, pp 106-117 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the European Union's evolving approach to decarbonizing its gas sector in pursuit of climate neutrality by 2050, as mandated by the EU Climate Law. The EU faces the dual challenge of phasing out unabated fossil gas while ensuring energy security and economic stability. The chapter explores three key strategies for reducing fossil gas use: demand reduction through efficiency, substitution with renewable energy sources, and replacement by low-carbon gases like biomethane and hydrogen. It also highlights the critical need to curb methane emissions across the gas value chain and debates the merits of direct versus indirect electrification. Sector-specific decarbonization pathways are presented for energy, buildings, and industry, alongside regulatory and market frameworks, including the new EU Methane Regulation. Ultimately, the chapter underscores the urgency of integrated policy action and targeted investments to align gas use with the EU's broader climate objectives.
