Chapter 6 in Japan, Latin America and the Caribbean, 2026, pp 127-146 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines the Indo-Pacific from the perspective of Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) by analyzing how Japan and Australia position the region within their Indo-Pacific frameworks. Japan and Australia share concerns regarding the rise of China and have actively rebuilt their security and economic alliances. Similar to Japan, Australia is an active advocate of the international rule of law and a promoter of freedom of navigation and trade based on international law. This chapter asserts that the new Indo-Pacific is an area of rapid economic growth and is critical for global security. LAC should be part of the conversation on global governance that will shape trade and security in the Indo-Pacific; otherwise, they risk being affected by the policies and strategies of great and middle powers, which could have negative consequences for a region that now depends on trade, investment, and development cooperation with the Indo-Pacific.
