Security, privacy, and compliance

Chapter 5 in The Rise of Blockchains, 2026, pp 78-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter examines blockchain as a “secure by design” architecture that addresses the vulnerabilities of centralized systems. By eliminating single points of failure through decentralization, sharding, and cryptographic hashing, blockchain provides a robust defense against cyberattacks. The analysis contrasts blockchain's “trustless” models with the traditional “security through obscurity” approach. Special focus is given to the healthcare industry, where blockchain-based Electronic Health Records (EHRs) offer a solution to rampant data breaches, inefficient “push-pull” data models, and fragmented informed consent. The chapter also explores the synergy between blockchain and AI security, demonstrating how immutable ledgers mitigate “data poisoning” and safeguard sensitive information through zero-knowledge proofs. Furthermore, it details how blockchain secures the IoT against botnets and unauthorized surveillance. Finally, the discussion evaluates regulatory compliance, illustrating how permissioned networks like OpenIDL streamline insurance reporting while maintaining strict data privacy and auditability.
