IoT and quality data at work in real time

Joanna Rosak-Szyrocka and Radoslaw Wolniak

Chapter 4 in Quality 4.0 and Artificial Intelligence, 2026, pp 67-82 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter investigates the disruptive impact of the Internet of Things (IoT) and digital technologies on quality management through Quality 4.0. This topic also serves as an example of how to break down departmental silos between IT and OT with current production data integration solutions that take quality management beyond plant floor process control to the entire lifespan of a product—from design through production, service, use and recycling. At the heart of this change are Digital Product Passports (DPPs) that allow a dynamic and trustworthy quality chain to be established, providing provenance data, real-time tracking and immediate availability of certificates. The efficiency of this system is bolstered further by the use of QR codes to provide a bridge for the easily accessible synchronisation between physical products and digital infrastructure, offering radical transparency, a new plane of compliance and stakeholder trust in both a B2B and B2C setting. Furthermore, it also underlines the increasing significance of quality of experience (QoE), which in essence redefines quality through the end-user perception of value, reliability and credibility with data. The successful use of these instruments relies on the degree of digital maturity of enterprises, in particular their capacity to handle inter-operable high-quality data. The chapter ends by applying Smart Quality to example cases from Volvo, Philips and Adidas, demonstrating how the concept can be operationalised in different sectors, as well as deriving key learnings that establish links between quality, sustainability and competitive advantage.
