Abstract:
In this chapter, we show, with inspiration from the world, how societies can invest in capacity for social innovation. We begin the chapter by mapping how social innovation came on the international agenda in the 1990s, partly through an increased focus in the OECD, the UN, the WEF and the EU. We review the role and focus of the various actors, with particular emphasis on the EU's programmes for social innovation – including how they are implemented in Denmark. Against this backdrop, we present five different examples of how to support, invest and build capacity for social innovation nationally, and summarise key learning points from the different approaches.
