Abstract:
This paper analyses how leadership, which is distributed among community members where there is no appointed formal leader, can impact family-run businesses. We propose shared leadership concept as an interpretation of business behavior of immigrant entrepreneurs. Empirically, we draw upon data from semi-structured interviews conducted with Vietnamese chosen as an interrogated society due to the fact that there are a very entrepreneurial group in comparison with other groups of immigrants in Poland. Through understanding how they lead their business, cooperate with ethnic members, or share knowledge, we explore the distributed leadership concept in terms of environmental and social terms, and business effectiveness. For the purpose of the study we use following terms: shared, distributed, or collective interchangeably. We reach the conclusion that in the described community there is no term such as “leader”. Instead of one person influencing there are multiple community members being leaders in a certain situation. The data show they inspire themselves mutually. We reach the conclusion that shared leadership can have positive impact on community performance and further contribute to systemic effects of leadership distribution.
