A chapter in Contemporary Rural Development Programs from IntechOpen

Abstract: By improving and disseminating biogas technology, energy poverty can be minimized, and people's status on the energy ladder can be improved. There is still a lack of equal distribution of biogas technology around the world. Although biogas technology is still in its infancy in developing countries, it has advanced in countries like China and India. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of biogas technology as a vehicle for rural development in the Limpopo province of South Africa. Open-ended and closed-ended questionnaires, field surveys, and desk studies were used to collect primary data. In analyzing the questionnaires' responses, descriptive and comparative analysis was applied, and the results were interpreted. The analysis and interpretation were carried out using a comparative analysis. Several factors contribute to the implementation of biogas technology, according to the findings. They include energy need, high cost of electricity and firewood, and poverty. Based on the results, local strategies such as education and awareness, loan provision and subsidies, as well as technical services will encourage the use and application of biogas.
