Integration of Six Sigma Tools into the Quality Management System of Ethiopian Manufacturing Industries

Abduletif Hebo

A chapter in Business, Management and Economics Annual Volume 2024 from IntechOpen

Abstract: A quality management system is a well-documented system that ensures consistency and improvements in working methods. Six Sigma contains a set of tools and techniques for process improvement. This chapter discusses the possibility of integrating Six Sigma tools into the quality management system of Ethiopian manufacturing industries. Both tools can be integrated through basic principles, improvement cycles, and/or insertion into existing integrated systems with new paradigms. Six Sigma's Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (DMAIC) model can be integrated with ISO 9001 QMS's Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle to improve all processes and all entire systems. Furthermore, five main principles of Six Sigma can be equivalently fit into the seven principles of ISO 9001. The analysis herein shows how this integration occurs and the related benefits for manufacturing organizations. In the comprehensive approach to excellence, where most improvement tools such as the BPR, BSC, Kaizen and ISO 9001 QMS were compiled under the TQM umbrella, Six Sigma improvement steps/cycles can be integrated into steps such as planning, design and analysis, and implementation and improvement.
