Successful, Sustainable and Scalable: How Clinical Scholars Leveraged Community-Based System-Level Outcomes to Address Health Disparities Nationwide

Claudia S.P. Fernandez

A chapter in From Clinical Practice to Public Health Applications - The Successful, Sustainable and Scalable Outcomes of the Clinical Scholars Program from IntechOpen

Abstract: From 2015 to 2023, the Clinical Scholars National Leadership Institute enrolled five cohorts totaling 44 interprofessional healthcare teams, encompassing 162 mid-career health professionals who themselves represented 15 different professions. Over a three-year enrollment period, the program equipped the participants with advanced and robust equity-centered leadership skills as the teams focused on addressing challenging, intractable problems leading to health disparities in their home communities. Each project successfully "moved the needle" to measurably lessen local health disparities, and by the end of the program in 2023, raised a further $141,000,000 to support sustainability efforts of their endeavors, showing a greater than 6.7 return-on-investment compared to the funding directed toward their training. Their work resulted in over 900 new partnerships being formed, 75 new jobs being created, and 179 career advancements for the enrolled participants. Their projects directly impacted the lives of nearly 850,000 US residents and trained an additional 32,000 individuals to continue to promote a culture of health and a focus on lessening health disparities. This chapter details the conception, construction, and implementation of the Clinical Scholars program with the aim of providing concrete, evidence-based strategies for others who might like to replicate the successful outcomes of this work.
