Dusk to Dawn: Preventing Youth Violence before it Occurs

Claudia S.P. Fernandez

A chapter in From Clinical Practice to Public Health Applications - The Successful, Sustainable and Scalable Outcomes of the Clinical Scholars Program from IntechOpen

Abstract: Youth violence is a significant public health problem that can have life-long negative impacts on a person's physical, mental, and social functioning. In this chapter, we describe the process to develop and implement Dusk to Dawn (D2D), a hospital-based youth violence prevention program in Omaha, Nebraska. The program consisted of a one-time, 2.5-hour class in the trauma bay for 12-18-year-old, multi-race/-ethnic participants, moderated by a credible messenger, an individual whose lived experience is shared by the population of interest. This prevention class influenced the youth's perceptions about their risk and protective factors related to violence etiology, learning violent behavior, and conflict resolution. After participation in D2D, a significant majority would recommend it to other youth, believed the program improved their understanding of violence, and believed D2D staff understood their lived experiences.
