Abstract: Performance is a state of competitivity that ensures the maintenance and the development on the market, where everybody attempts to reach the first place. Each enterprise will take advantage from the business environment, and in order to get one step ahead the others it will „invent” new methods of winning the competition, since nowadays performance has got larger valencies (global performance or lasting development). This paper tries to assess the Romanian business environment on sectors of activity, especially in the year 2007, when Romania has become a member of the European Union and to make comparisons between the Romanian business environment and that of other countries. We believe that a valid analysis of the business environment is very important as it helps the enterprises to be aware of the direction they are heading and contributes to pointing out the favourable factors it should develop, the ones that give them a competitional advantage, but also the factors that have a bad influence. Moreover, we try to present the strengths and the weaknesses, the opportunities and the drawbacks of the Romanian business environment.
