Abstract: Labour standards are supposed to guarantee decent working conditions for employees. In that regard, the International Labour Organisation was founded in 1919 already. Since the 1990ties ILO concentrates on 'Core Labour Standards' which are abolition of child labour, of forced labour, freedom of association and bargaining and non-discrimination. Whereas trade and competition theories appear too narrow to analyse labour standards, institutional economics offer a valid basis. Standards determine entry conditions to a club. Such a club's welfare impact depends on the inclusiveness of the entry conditions. Empirically, core labour standards are mostly positively correlated to indicators of economic openness, i.e. globalization. Yet, there is need to develop more sophisticated labour standard indicators ad the current ones are relatively crude.(Original text only available in german language)
