Offshoring und Outsourcing in der deutschen Automobilindustrie

Henning Klodt

Chapter 7 in List Forum Band 33, 2007, vol. 2, pp 129-140 from List Gesellschaft e.V.

Abstract: The paper explores the interactions between foreign direct investment and international trade of the Ger-man motorcar industry. Over the past ten years, German car manufacturers have created more than 100.000 jobs in Central and Eastern European reform countries. These activities have been associated with a surge of trade in intermediate goods – both from and to the host countries. The paper concludes that offshoring and outsourcing strategies of car manufacturers are closely interrelated. Their common rationale is the establishment of global value-added networks which provide substantially improved em-ployment opportunities also for German workers.
