Abstract: Germany’s manufacturing industry has been able to regain some of its prominence over the last decade. The re-industrialization was possible as some of the factors which burdened manufacturers in the early 1990s disappeared or shrank. The structure of consumption has stabilized, the upward trend to outsource value added in manufacturing to the service industry has abated and substitution effects in the wake of offshoring have diminished. In addition, the booming world trade in manufactured goods combined with a more favourable cost and exchange rate development have relaxed the pressure on the relative price of manufactured goods.
