Abstract:
Knowledge is increasingly becoming the decisive factor in production. Owing to its rapid diffusion, competitive advantages can only be secured by constantly updating and expanding the current stock of knowledge. Due to this reason, current innovation activities and investment in innovation are becoming a focal point of long-term-oriented economic policy advice. Those who cannot keep up with technological progress and do not have a say in any field of technology stand to fall far behind newly industrialised countries. In order to assess North Rhine-Westphalia's future prospects in the field of innovation, this study analyses how North Rhine-Westphalia ranks in terms of innovation activity compared to other German states and the rest of Europe. It also analyses where policy impact should be used to foster research and innovation, thus stetting the stage for future economic growth. The study is based on current educational, scientific and innovation indicators. (Original text only available in german language)
