Abstract:
This paper concentrates on the specific characteristics, problems and needs of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It focuses on subcontracting as an opportunity for the industrial SMEs to build partnerships with larger companies and reveals some benefits and threats for SMEs operating as subcontractors. The paper presents results and findings from an empirical study of 44 Bulgarian industrial SMEs-subcontractors having different types of relations with the contractors. Most of them are sewing, construction or woodworking enterprises which have developed stable relationships with the client companies. The study characterises the mechanism of interaction between participants in subcontracting chains. It outlines the main challenges and opportunities for the Bulgarian industrial SMEs that operate mainly as subcontractors.
