Abstract: The paper addresses one of the key issues in the literature on family business – the succession of the entrepreneur in the cases when there is no solution for the succession within the family. Particular attention is paid on the transfer of the business to its employees as a possible solution. The main topics discussed are the importance and relevance of employee buyouts, the motives of the actors, factors of success and failure and their impact on the firm, the seller, the employees and the local community. The methodology employed in this paper combines literature review, discussions with illustrative cases and synthesis. The paper offers a synthesized model of a possible trajectory for the transfer of business ownership to its employees as well as relevant conclusions and policy recommendations. The concept of employee ownership often stays ‘under the radar’ in the research and literature on family businesses but it can be developed into an ‘entrepreneurial’ solution for the succession problem, creating new opportunities for young people.
