Challenges and Opportunities of Sustainable Economic Growth: The Case of Malta

Abstract:
This book brings together five articles which assess whether recent economic growth in Malta was based on, or has led to, the development of macroeconomic imbalances. Economic growth appears to have been driven by a significant increase in the economy’s potential, through a boost in total factor productivity. The resulting rise in GDP instead of leading to a spike in consumption appears to have ended up mostly as higher savings. There is also no evidence that faster economic growth was fuelled by rising credit or has led to property prices deviating from fundamentals.
