Abstract:
This book provides a comprehensive framework for the study of Indian nationalism. Departing from uni-dimensional explanations of Indian nationalism-which see it as a product of of caste, interest or power groups, personalities or elites-it presents an integrated analysis of the situation in which national consciousness emerged in India The author discusses topics like the background and legacy of 1857; social setting and reform movements; economic background and political aspects of the rise of nationalism. He also examines the formation of the Indian National Congress. This edition contains a new Introduction which updates the research on the subject.
