Abstract: This paper is a practical guide for researchers, practitioners and policymakers, which wants to introduce the study of sample size calculation and power analysis for impact evaluation techniques. First, some basic concepts of impact evaluation and statistics inference; analyze the different steps in an impact evaluation design, and discuss sampling techniques and is relationship with hierarchical models (single, cluster and block design). Then, the study develops the formulas for sample size determination for experimental and non-experimental design (instrumental variables, differences in differences, regression discontinuity and matching), and includes adjustment for using covariates and problems in randomization (partial compliance and spillovers effects) in the basic framework of sample size determination. Finally, the study includes practical examples and applications in STATA package.
