Mapping Job Search Intensityjob search activity Across European Countries

Simon Watkins ()

Chapter Chapter 7 in Basic Income, Work Incentives and Job Search Behaviour, 2025, pp 125-143 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract This chapter develops a measure of job search intensity using time use data across ten European countries, capturing both the frequency and duration of job search activities. The analysis reveals several important patterns that have significant implications for basic income policy and research. Whilst participation in job search activities is generally low across countries there are marked variations in both the frequency and intensity of job searching behaviour across different welfare regimes. The cross-national variations suggest that the relationship between welfare regime types and job search behaviour is complex. The methodology provides a valuable tool which could be used to evaluate future basic income experiments, allowing researchers to observe how basic income shapes job search activity.
