Abstract: Abstract Denying women their property rights is a common social practice despite existing laws. Women’s dispossession from land is further amplified for deserted and widowed women, who have to struggle for survival in a hostile environment. This extreme form of dispossession, however, also prompts women to act. This chapter focuses on a social movement that supported single women to claim their rights to land and livelihoods. Based on the narratives of the single women of Stree Mukti Sangharsha Chalwal, the chapter examines their dispossession, their struggles, the gains and challenges of the movement, the opportunities available in a changing development scenario and the way forward.
