Nhavi Women in Pune City: Renegotiating New Opportunities for Livelihood

Abstract: Abstract This chapter explores how Nhavi (barber caste) women in Pune who have entered the beauty parlour profession are renegotiating their gendered roles. Situated in an historical and social analysis of the Nhavi caste, the chapter examines the employment, earnings challenges and aspirations of these women, using the methodology of oral narratives. The inferences are that as these women are denied a graduate education, they opt for vocational training in professions like beauty parlours. The chapter argues that despite new opportunities offered by globalisation and liberalisation, Nhavi women remain trapped in the stigma of a caste-based occupation.
