Abstract: Abstract Soon after regulatory approval of a new generation of opioid-based analgesics for pain manage0ment, from 1999 to 2021 close to 645,000 individuals died from overdoses involving opioids, including prescription and illicit opioids, which equated to a rate of 32.4 per 100,000 population in 2021 and an average of about 28,000 deaths per year over the 23-year period.
