Methodology

James Forder

Chapter Chapter 10 in Milton Friedman, 2019, pp 159-195 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Friedman’s essay The Methodology of Positive Economics is considered in comparison to the practical, working methodology of his economics. It is argued that the methodology essay is rubbish and it is observed that the ideas for which it is most famous were well-understood before Friedman wrote. His practical methodology, however, is argued to be very reasonable. One lesson drawn is that Friedman was unable to give a philosophical expression to his practice; another that further enquiries into the true meaning of his essay should cease.
