Allyn Young’s Role as an Author, Teacher and Mentor
Ramesh Chandra
Chapter 8 in Allyn Abbott Young, 2020, pp 235-259 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract This chapter discusses Young’s role as an author, teacher and mentor. Contrary to the widespread belief that he wrote little, when his bibliography was compiled it amounted to a considerable achievement. He was a highly respected teacher and revered for his generosity in terms of ideas and time to his students. His teaching style included long pauses as he developed his ideas as he went along. He was mentor to famous students such as Knight, Chamberlin and Currie. His influence on Chamberlin’s Theory of Monopolistic Competition and Knight’s Risk, Uncertainty and Profit was immense. But he differed from them for their static view of competition as he strove to develop a dynamic theory.
