Abstract: Abstract Meade, an advocate of the middle ground, believed in the free economic market but also in moderate levelling to produce a sense of common citizenship. His case for equality, in common with other social democrats like Tawney, Titmuss, Durbin and T.H. Marshall, was based on income-related utility differentials, the Rawlsian veil of ignorance, the sense of community, the need for compensation and empowerment but, above all, the social consensus that makes justice the popular choice.
