Structural Transformation, Small Farmers, and Food Security in Asia

Charles Timmer

Chapter 14 in Institutions and Comparative Economic Development, 2012, pp 281-297 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Food security is not a viable social objective unless it is also a profitable undertaking for input suppliers, farmers, and marketers of output. Consumers must then be able to afford to purchase this food, secure in the knowledge that it is safe and nutritious. Traditionally, this ‘agri-business system’ perspective has focused primarily on large, integrated input suppliers, on large farms in developed countries, and on supermarket supply chains (Reardon and Timmer 2007).
