Chapter 10 in Economic Development with Special Reference to East Asia, 1964, pp 322-335 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract The role of agriculture in the early economic development of Japan has already been the subject of several authors in the English literature.2 In their broad research all the contributors seem to agree on the main features, such as the role of agriculture in financing investments for industrialization, providing food for increased demand stemming from population growth and rising incomes, and supplying cheap labour to the other sectors of the economy. It appears, at first glance, that little remains to be studied.
