Abstract: Abstract I have been asked to deal with agricultural developments in relation to the take-off into sustained growth. This theme is a vast one and must be narrowed down considerably if it is to be at all manageable within a short paper. Accordingly, I have chosen to deal primarily with the problem of agrarian reform, by which I mean that process in which the social structure of agriculture, with regard to property, labour, and types of enterprise, changes from feudal or other pre-capitalist forms to modern ones. The importance of this transformation for technological progress in agriculture, and hence for the take-off, will, I hope, become clear as we proceed.
