Introduction

Geoffrey Harcourt

A chapter in The Microeconomic Foundations of Macroeconomics, 1977, pp 1-24 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Of necessity this introduction must be personal and uneven, for the subject of the conference, ‘no less than the whole of a major (perhaps the major) part of economics, considered ... from a particular angle’ (Hicks, 1973a, p. 1), brought together several traditions and approaches, in not all of which could I claim any expertise.1 Furthermore, while I hope to escape classification in one Hahn category, that of ‘economists [unable to] grow bitter gracefully’, I am less hopeful of escaping another, that of economists ‘with a theoretical bent [who] ... cannot now understand what the best minds in their subject are saying’ (Hahn, 1973b, p. 322).
