Chapter 20 in Structural Change, Economic Interdependence and World Development, 1987, pp 301-320 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Among current problems of development in today’s world economy, differing from one region or country to another, investments doubtlessly assume a central position. Since the mid-seventies, their scope, structure, efficiency, and methods and sources of their funding and so on, have been subject to increasingly complicated internal and external conditions. Changes take place with regard to factors of economic growth; for example, the problem of energy and raw materials has become extremely grave, both in terms of guaranteeing the supply of raw materials and fuels to the economy, and of converting the economy to technologies capable of saving raw materials and fuels, as well as of developing other sources of energy and searching for new raw materials. Economic structures change under the impact of the techno-scientific revolution; new, promising branches gain ground rapidly, while others enjoy only relative changes for expansion, or are absolutely regressive.
