Chapter 8 in The Balance between Industry and Agriculture in Economic Development, 1989, pp 143-160 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Economic growth generates important changes in the sectoral composition of the economy. In the early stages of growth, the economy is largely rural, whereas in mature economies, agriculture constitutes only a small fraction of the economy. As a good part of the world’s population still lives in rural areas, it is of great interest to understand the dynamics of this process. The subject of sectoral growth can be placed in a broader perspective, since the process of growth in mature economies generates other sectoral changes of great importance, such as a shift towards services. This process has many similarities to the process of industrialisation.
