Discussion on Part IV
Aladar Sipos
A chapter in The Balance between Industry and Agriculture in Economic Development, 1989, pp 230-235 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Professor G. S. Bhalla, the lead discussant for Professor Sipos’s paper, said the paper systematically outlined changes that had taken place in Hungarian agriculture. There were three phases in this continuum — the ‘mistakes’ of the past, when agriculture was the source of ‘surplus’ for industrialisation; the policies initiated after 1956 which stressed the role of both incentives (e.g., prices) and technology; and finally, the current policies stressing the role of modernisation and investment in agriculture.
