Abstract:
Abstract In Italy, as in other countries, the beginning of modern industry was largely based on small firms operating in rural areas or ‘putting out’ work to rural dwellers. A comprehensive account of Italian experiences with ‘small-scale industrialisation in rural areas’ would have therefore to start from a remote past, and would be too large a subject for the present paper.
