Abstract: Abstract The agro-industrial transition addressed in this paper is the movement of a predominantly agricultural economy into one in which the size of the labour force in industries (mining, manufacturing, construction, public utilities, transportation and communication) exceeds the labour force in agriculture (farming, forestry, fishing and livestock). Typically in Monsoon Asia, the agro-industrial transition begins with three-quarters of the labour force in agriculture, which decreases to one-half midway in the transition and is completed with one-quarter remaining in agriculture.1
