Abstract: Abstract According to one witty remark, the main result of perestroika in the USSR resides in the fact that it is still under way. Particular results in different areas are not assessed unambiguously. In 1988 the situation on the consumer market deteriorated noticeably. But the feeling that the country is in the process of change is becoming stronger. If the situation in the USSR is looked at from the viewpoint of the shifts occurring in China, Hungary, Poland and some other socialist countries, one comes to the conclusion that the search is ongoing for a new model of socialist societal organisation adequate for the modern epoch with its revolutionary changes in technology, culture and information. The need is for democratisation of public life and international relations and for a new political thinking. The Stalinist model proved to have no prospects for ensuring social progress under the changed conditions.
