Discussion of Professor Srinivasan’s Paper
William Baumol
A chapter in Public and Private Enterprise in a Mixed Economy, 1980, pp 32-35 from Palgrave Macmillan
Abstract:
Abstract Professor Barkai said that Professor Srinivasan’s very interesting paper had started with a definition of private and public enterprise, and said he was also tempted to offer a definition. He characterised a public enterprise as one which ultimately relied on the government purse. In that sense, he said, the major American banks were also public enterprises, because, as Kaldor had pointed out, the government would rescue them from a threatening collapse, even in the absence of any formal agreement.
