Chapter 28 in The Economics of Long-Distance Transportation, 1983, pp 374-383 from Palgrave Macmillan Abstract: Abstract A recurrent motif in the conference was the need to consider very specific circumstances. The transport problems considered are special because of: (1) Geographical conditions, which have their counterpart in the technical solutions which may be found. (2) Socio-economic systems, which influence theories, aims, organisations, constraints and the institutional framework. (3) Transport functions, arising from a specific structure of production and consumption, nature of commodities, length of journey, need for interchange and pattern of origins and destinations. At each session, delegates pinpointed the distinction and differences peculiar to their own problems. It is quite clear that in many respects the problems found in the different countries are very different — and in some cases diverging, for example in the future role of rail transport.
