Chapter 13 in The Determinants of National Saving and Wealth, 1983, pp 272-285 from Palgrave Macmillan

Abstract: Abstract Soviet household saving is examined in the context of the life cycle model of saving. The institutional features of the Soviet economy which one would expect systematically to affect saving patterns are described. Empirical work on the determinants of Soviet household saving is summarised and interpreted in the context of the life cycle model. Despite the limited data, the evidence suggests that Soviet household saving displays problems familiar in the West and which can be explained quite satisfactorily in the life cycle hypothesis framework.
