Abstract: Abstract Politicians, intellectuals and the general concerned public in Latin America are justifiably worried about the future of their region. Economists have gathered here from all over the world to examine the interaction between countries and development — this at least is my understanding. This meeting takes place at a critical moment, when a development path must be chosen that will respond to the needs and hopes of the more than 600 million Latin Americans who will be entering the twenty-first century.
